New all-wheel drive system improves active safety and dynamic handling
more inside

MAGNA STEYR Powertrain is presenting the ATC all-wheel-drive system (Active Torque Control), the first production-stage model in a completely new, progressive transfer case generation for all-wheel-drive vehicles, at the IAA. The ATC's most important advantage over conventional systems is that it distributes torque extremely quickly and precisely between the front and rear axles.

A special design feature of the new all-wheel-drive system is its variable torque transfer to the front axle, but permanent direct drive to the rear axle. The torque is transferred to the front through a multi-plate clutch with fast and high-precision response that is controlled by a newly developed electric motor driven actuator.

The precision, fast response of the assembly to any change in road conditions and the resultant torque split tailored exactly to the requirements cause

> a considerable increase in active driving safety,
> substantially improved dynamic handling, and
> excellent traction that is supported by the locking action of the multi-plate clutch.

The new transfer case provides a range of design features:

> the ATC can be installed in both longitudinally and transversely mounted engines,
> the output to the front axle can either be via chain or gear drive,
> optimized layout means that the ATC takes up less room, which also enables it to be adapted to customers' highly complex package requirements,
> the aluminum housing has been optimized in terms of weight and noise.

MAGNA STEYR Powertrain has developed the new transfer case as part of an ATC family concept that is produced at its Austrian plants in Lannach and Ilz. The company's engineering and assembly services also include the electronic controller for activating the multi-plate clutch and supplying the function software.
